Essay Test Helper Privacy Policy

Essay Test Helper ("the Service") is a Chrome extension that helps teachers find pasted text in students' written assignments in Google Classroom. It is operated by 4ours lab ("we"). We handle only the minimum information the Service needs.

1. Information we process and why

  • The teacher's Google account email and account ID, to sign the teacher in, keep count of analyzed papers and grant purchased credits.
  • Analysis count records: a one-way SHA-256 hash of "teacher ID + assignment ID + student ID" and the time it was first analyzed. These records contain no student names, raw student IDs or student writing.
  • Credit records: the number of credits granted and an order note.

2. Information that never leaves the teacher's browser

  • Student writing, document edit history and student names are processed only inside the teacher's browser. They are never sent to our server or any third party.
  • Settings and scores entered by the teacher are stored only in the teacher's browser. Exported Excel and PDF files stay on the teacher's computer.

3. Google user data

  • The Service uses read-only Google Classroom scopes to list the teacher's courses, coursework and student submissions, and class rosters. This data is used only to display it to the teacher and to find each student's document, and it is not stored on our server.
  • The Service reads the edit history of student Google Docs that the teacher can open, inside the teacher's browser, to calculate pasted passages.
  • Essay Test Helper's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
  • We do not sell Google user data, use it for advertising, or use it for purposes unrelated to the Service. No human reads this data, except where the policy allows, such as for security investigations or to comply with law.

4. Retention and deletion

  • Account and analysis count records are kept while the teacher's account exists and are deleted promptly on request.
  • Removing the extension deletes the settings and scores stored in the browser.
  • Teachers can revoke the Service's Google access at any time in their Google Account (Security › Third-party access).

5. Processors

  • Account and analysis count records are stored with Supabase, a cloud database service.
  • If paid credits are sold, payments are handled by a payment service (Groble). We never receive card numbers or other payment details.

6. Sharing

We do not share the information we process with third parties, except when required by law.

8. Changes

If we change this policy, we will post the new version and its effective date on this page.
